When in Doubt, Wear a Dress!
With warmer temperatures (even here in Michigan), Mother’s Day around the corner, bridal showers, baby showers and lots of Derby parties going on, a dress is always a great idea! I personally am not a dress person, BUT it totally depends on the style and cut.
In this month’s blog post I want to give you some tips about how to find the right fit, fabric and print (or no print), color and the importance of the right footwear and accessories.
Occasion: Before you start looking for your dress, consider the occasion and dress code. The style of a dress can range from casual to formal.
Fit: Pick a dress for your body shape. Pay attention to the waist, bust and length. If needed, use a tailor to make your dress a perfect fit for you!
Fabric: Choose the appropriate fabric for the occasion and season. While lighter fabrics like linen or cotton are great for summer (and for more casual events), heavier fabrics like wool or velvet are more suitable for winter. Also not every fabric works for every body type and somatotype. Brocade for example doesn’t work for curvy body types. If you are petite size (5’4” and under) make sure you shop for petite clothing.
Accessories: Accessories are like the icing on the cake! Think of jewelry, hats, belts, silk scarves or handbags to compliment your dress and elevate your overall look. For the more eclectic and unique style personality, vintage boutiques are a great source to achieve a more unique style vibe.
Footwear: A lot of times shoes are a huge issue! Most women are at a loss when it comes to which shoes to pair with their outfit. And I’m telling you, the wrong shoe style can definitely ruin an outfit. Suede is always more casual, while patent leather, satin, velvet or embellishments add a little bit of glam. Also, a pointed or almond shaped toe is more dressy than a round or square toe.
Hair and Makeup: Coordinate your hairstyle and makeup with the style of the dress. A sleek updo might suit a formal dress, while loose waves create a more casual vibe.
Confidence: Without confidence no outfit will look complete! Your attitude will add the last puzzle piece to your outfit and will definitely make you shine.
Last but not least: Rather be overdressed than underdressed! There is nothing worse than being at an event where you feel like everyone is dressed up to the ninth and you are not!
